UCSF - here we come ...... !!

We finally got our appointment with UCSF scheduled.  We go next Tuesday, November 23rd at 9:00 am.  We will be seing Dr. William Ryan, MD, a Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon.  This will be a consultation to hear a second opinion on treatment options.  The woman I made the appointment with was incredibly kind and compassionate.  If she is any indication of the treatment we can expect, I know Mom will be in excellent hands!

We also are waiting to hear from Dr. Daniel Mirda's office, our local oncologist.  He consulted with Mom on her Lung Cancer several years back.  Dr. Manubens, Mom's cardiologist, recommended we see him in addition to the doctors as UCSF.  We hope to get our appointment with Dr. Mirda very soon.

Yesterday afternoon we ran a few errands in town and ended with Mom getting a pedicure!

Swallowing is still painful for Mom and we were warned this would continue to be an issue.  It is very important that she maintains a nutritious diet so she will be her strongest for whichever treatment option she chooses.

Foods that are soft, lukewarm and bland are what she prefers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for us?

Love,
Pattie

  1. Definitely NOT 4 Loco.

Maybe Ramen? I have a whole stash here at my desk! Not very nutritious. That, and she's not in college. Maybe I should keep thinking...

    Love you G!!

  2. Grams...just wanted you to know I was thinking about you! Try rice with very small pieces of chicken?! It sounds like it might be an opportunity to go online and try some new dishes! Let us know what you cook up! Love you

Glad to hear that you are getting some great medical attention. As for food suggestions, My mom Paula suggests, grits with a little cheese. This is my dad's vicente's favorite!

  4. Hi Mary,

If my Bob finds out your being served grits with cheese he may come join you - - one of his favorite things, also. He likes it with a poached egg on top and of course, BUTTER! :)

    Love and prayers.

  5. Hi Grandma,
My Mom and Don have a great recipe for potato soup that you drink.
I had lots of it when I had my tracheotomy and could not eat solid food.
I will ask my Mom or Don to post the recipe.

Grandma you are the TOUGHEST person I know.

  6. My recommendation is smoothies. You can blend any fresh, canned or frozen fruit with milk, honey or whatever sombination you like.
A blender is a must right now. You can also blend any hot soup or vegetable.
For a starch; mashed potatoes would be good or polenta with any kind of sauce. Hope it works for you. Lore
